Contemporary Photography in Hawai’i 2020
I am honored to have an individual image and a portfolio included in this year’s Contemporary Photography in Hawai’i 2020 survey. The show is sponsored by Pacific New Media and the juror is Maika Pollack, Director and Chief Curator, John Young Museum of Art and University of Hawai‘i Mānoa Galleries + Assistant Professor of Curatorial Studies and Art History.
I am particularly pleased, no, I’m thrilled (!!!) that the individual image (above) selected by the juror is an analog image made on film with my dad’s vintage Zeiss Ikon Nettar 517/16 (circa 1953) camera. Call me sentimental but I feel like I am honoring my Dad when I use this camera. The image is a favorite too as I have been making images of this building for some time and none of them really worked before this one!

My portfolio No Outlet was also selected by the Maika Pollack. This series of ten images is part of an ongoing body of work and I am both encouraged and flattered to have it included in the Contemporary Photography in Hawai’i 2020 show.
While this is normally a gallery exhibit this year the exhibit will be virtual due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Regardless, I am very honored to share the virtual walls with many of my talented friends and colleagues.
Please take a moment to view the online show on the Pacific New Media website and if you are as inspired by the work as I am share it widely with your friends.

2020 New Normal: Contemporary Photography From A Pandemic In The Pacific
We have all been impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic in one way or another. The world was a scary and isolating place for a while and then things just got surreal! I couldn’t help but take my camera out to explore and was not surprised to find out that other photographers were doing the same.
The ARTS at Marks Garage put out a call to artists for an exhibit titled New Normal: Contemporary Photography From A Pandemic In The Pacific and I am honored to have two images in the show.
Even more flattering is that my image “Waiting Patiently” received an Honorable Mention (below left). It will be on view along with my other image “Dressed to the N95” (below right) and the other selected works from November 17 to December 30, 2020 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
