No Outlet Zine

I’m just a little bit nervous to be participating in a Zine Launch Event!  I’ve wanted to make a zine for a while but procrastinated for one reason or another until…

…a group of my photography friends got together and agreed that we needed to start putting our work out into the world more.  Many of us committed to creating a zine (a small informal magazine that is often economically produced or hand made) or other publication featuring our images.  A lot of stars aligned and the Downtown Art Center generously offered our group a table where we could sell our publications in conjunction with First Friday and the opening of the Documentary Photography show on June 2, 2023.

I began work on what has become No Outlet a few years ago when I hand stitched together a book dummy from images that I printed on cardstock on my home printer.  It was pretty lo-fi and needed a lot editing but it was a start, a rough one, but a start nonetheless.  I set it aside and recently pulled it out again and began to rework it into the zine you see below.

Honolulu is in the midst of a building boom that, under the guise of progress, is constantly changing the face of the city and the way we live within it. When I look at the city I see beauty, optimism and maybe even a little bit of melancholy in the complex array of structures and scenes that make up the city. How do we balance development with preservation to ensure the we do, in fact, have an outlet?

The images in No Outlet are primarily drawn from my series of the same name and from my City Scenes: Looking Closer series.

The Downtown Art Center is located in the Chinatown Gateway Plaza at 1041 Nuuanu Ave., (Second floor), Honolulu, HI 96817
