Over half a million people take in the scene of the Battle of Nuʻuanu annually.
Drawn in by majestic views that seduce them to the railing of the ever windy overlook they are mostly unaware bloody history at the site. The requisite crazy hair pictures are made and the view is recorded without giving much thought to the hundreds of warriors that were hurled over the precipice ending the 1795 battle that unified the Hawaiian islands under Kamehameha I.
Sentiments that prevailed in 1915 when the society pages reported on a delightful program in celebration of the battle seem to be, maybe not surprisingly, reflected in the conduct of contemporary visitors.
